Biography

I am a sociologist at the University of Bath and Director of the Centre for Death and Society. I have conducted research on funerary practices and costs, welfare support for funerals, and families at the end of life.

In this Fellowship I will visit comparable countries to see how other welfare states provide funerals for their most marginalised communities, such as people with no family, people who have no money or people who are homeless. I hope to bring back lessons to inform UK practice and standards for public health funerals, so that we have a fair, transparent and consistent funeral safety net for some of the most vulnerable people in society.
