Biography
For my Fellowship, I led the first Environmental Works Group in British Rail. Ideas were being introduced from 12 European and three Scandinavian railways, gained from three tours spread over two years. The success of these resulted in French Rail visiting three of our Railside Revivals. Unfortunately, in the lead up to privatisation, it was decided that my group did not 'put people in seats' and it was disbanded. This decision has now been reversed with rail companies and the Department of Transport investing extensively in such activities.
I took early retirement and worked as a consultant for railway and other companies. I also formed the first station friends group at Handforth (Friends of Handforth Station, FoHS). Today there are over 1,000 station groups and over 70 community rail partnerships (based on Railside Revivals). FoHS has celebrated its 25th anniversary, and is looking forward to the implementation of a grant of over £2m from the Access for All programme. Over the years FoHS has worked in partnership with all the community, especially schools and the disadvantaged. Today, our artist is working with the community and the designers for the new works. We have won numerous awards and grants, all thanks to the Fellowship.
