The therapeutic use of yoga in palliative care
I am a senior research fellow at the University of Bristol, where I co-lead the Palliative and End of Life Care Research Group, and the Founder of Good Grief Festival. My research over many years has focused on people's experiences of serious illness, the end of life and bereavement, and how to improve care in these domains.
My Fellowship in 2006 was conducted in India on the subject of yoga and meditation in palliative care, a subject close to my heart both personally and professionally. It informed my work teaching yoga and assisting in a hospice while I lived in London, and also my research career afterwards, which has focused on the holistic aspects of serious illness and care. In particular, it led to and informed my PhD study, which was on spiritual wellbeing and its assessment among people receiving palliative care in sub-Saharan Africa.
The Fellowship was a great foundation for my career and an amazing opportunity to travel and learn in India, making some great friendships and professional contacts along the way. It helped me to grow in confidence, explore a subject which interested my deeply, and find a meaningful and socially relevant career path.
