November 2024 Fellows' update: James Allen

James Allen has made significant strides with his tannery project, which he has established as a not-for-profit company focused on supporting education about natural fibres. Three schools and colleges have already visited the tannery, even though the building is not yet completed.

James is also committed to supporting the micro-tannery industry by offering visits and education for individuals interested in setting up their own micro-scale tanneries.

He was awarded a bursary to fund a tanning mentor, the UK's leading expert in vegetable tanning, for three years.

Finally, James has secured a grant of over £250,000 to build the tannery building, including the installation of 3-phase electricity, a rainwater harvesting system, and a reed bed system, as well as a classroom. This funding has enabled the project to progress much faster than originally expected, bringing it closer to opening than anticipated.
