I'm Senior Reviewer with Healthcare Improvement Scotland leading the planning, management and delivery of national quality improvement programmes across the health and care sector.

My Fellowship to the USA in 2015 sought to identify the opportunities and challenges in using health information technology to engage patients in activities that improve understanding of health and disease. Digital health comprises the technologies supporting an essential shift in methods, attitudes and actions regarding health and wellness in our society today. I was interested in learning more about the leading-edge work in the USA and how we could translate this into solutions for the NHS Scotland context and culture.

I have presented on my Fellowship nationally and internationally and the findings have helped inform the development of the National Strategy for Digital Health and Care in Scotland. Building on the learning from my Fellowship I have now completed my doctorate exploring the use of patient feedback captured through social media to inform improvements to quality and safety of care. The Fellowship was a great experience and a wonderful opportunity to rethink old ways and experiment with fresh ideas.
