Biography
I am the Executive Lead of the Support after Suicide Partnership, a national network working with organisations to ensure everyone bereaved or affected by suicide is offered timely and appropriate support. My Fellowship – to Japan and Hong Kong – looked at the national implementation of suicide prevention and bereavement support, delivered locally. I also explored the role of political uncertainty on policy and practice.
Since returning in 2018, I have worked with NHS England, Public Health England (PHE), government and many others to implement a national programme of locally delivered suicide bereavement support in every area of England. This is extremely important to me: bereavement by suicide is devastating and I don't think anyone should face it unsupported.
My Fellowship was – and still is – a beneficial experience. I learnt so much about how to make a significant national change in a devolved government system. It was more than this though, I grew in confidence and found an independence I still rely on. I travelled alone for seven weeks, exploring the world and my research on my terms. It gave me a new strength and a renewed vigour for the challenge of changing our field.
