As Director of Research for mySociety, I am a leading global expert in digital democracy, consulting with governments and parliaments all over the world to develop institutional capacity, and to support evidence-based policy and practice around digital tools for participation, transparency and accountability.
My Fellowship was in civic tech in New Zealand and Australia. I often speak at international events as a leader in the field of civic tech and citizen engagement, and have published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.
I hold a PhD in Politics and Governance, and have worked actively as a researcher for many years. I previously lectured in politics at Cardiff University. In 2016, I won the Best Paper Award at the Conference for eDemocracy and Open Government.
I am interested in privacy and information rights, and am leading the largest ever GDPR claim in the UK against companies misusing personal data via third-party tracking cookies.
I am a Council Member and Non-Executive Director of the Advertising Standards Authority, a Trustee of the Hansard Society, and Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts.
