Biography
I am now retired, but I volunteer as a National Trust guide at South Foreland Lighthouse and Fan Bay Deep Shelter tunnels. Additionally I am also a senior watchkeeper (instructor) with Eyes Along the Coast, National Coastwatch Institution Folkestone.
The main focus of my Fellowship was the recruiting and training of vessel traffic system (VTS) officers in the Canadian Coast Guard. My interest in this field was led by my being a coastguard officer at HM Coastguard Dover, which was the only British Coastguard station which specialised in maritime radar surveillance, the Channel Navigation Information Service (CNIS). My ten-week Fellowship enabled me to visit many VTS stations and other Canadian coastguard ships and facilities, and also qualify for the Canadian Coast Guard Advanced Search and Rescue course at the Transport Canada Training Institute (TCTI) in Cornwall, Ontario.
What I studied and learned during this period enabled me to pass on valuable techniques and information to CNIS Dover and also to the HM Coastguard training school at Christchurch, Dorset. I retired from HM Coastguard in 2012 while in the post of Senior Watch Manager and VTS Supervisor HM Coastguard Dover.
