Biography

I am a creative educator at Cwmni Theatr Arad Goch, Aberystwyth and a drama PGCE tutor at Aberystwyth University. The main topic of my Fellowship was education through community theatre, and it allowed me to study bilingual theatre – specifically the creative methods used in Tanzania to educate rural communities in preventing the spread of AIDS.

At a theatre conference in London in 1988, my group met Juma Bakari, a lecturer from Bagamoyo University, Tanzania who was on study leave at the time. We discussed at length the similarities and differences in theatrical styles between our cultures, but recognised the common thread of bilingualism and rural audiences. We decided to continue sharing practice and, following my Fellowship, Juma twice attended Agor Drysau – Opening Doors (Arad Goch's international festival of Arts for Young People in Aberystwyth).

My career has since focused significantly on community theatre and theatre in education for young audiences in Wales, and my time in Tanzania taught me the importance of respecting the creative skills, culture and interests of the target audience. The Fellowship allowed me the distance from which to critically evaluate my practice.
