Biography
I am Project Curator for the arts and cultural organisation An Lanntair, based in Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides. I am also involved in a grassroots community organisation Làrach, which promotes community and cultural resilience through creativity.
My Fellowship is titled Creative Islands, and is focused on building and sustaining island communities with strong cultural identities through creative thinking and practices. My trip was to Fogo Island, Newfoundland, researching their model for residencies in island communities, and the concept of 'economic nutrition' that seeks to create an ethical and transparent tool for providing financial 'nutrition' and resilience to fragile communities.
As a result of the Fellowship (along with other Scottish island-based partners) I am developing a geographically targeted ethical and fairtrade brand that is designed to support creative businesses and communities whilst providing a way for visitors and tourists to make ethical decisions about their purchases and service choices. The Fellowship gave me first-hand experience of how this kind of model was set up and how it works in practice in a community very similar to my own.
