Fellow’s Profile
Brazilian drumming, songs and dance
I grew up in the community music-making scene and understood what a powerful tool for social change community arts were.
I embarked on my Fellowship in 2004, travelling to Brazil to study with community projects. I set out to deepen my musical knowledge and immerse myself in the impactful delivery of social projects to return to the UK to offer experiences to those unable to travel to source to study. It was my first experience of travelling independently abroad.
I have since established three cultural arts organisations in Manchester. I am the Director of Percussion at dance collective Juba do Leão, Director of youth outfit Jubacana, and Artistic Director of Global Grooves, an inspirational carnival arts National Portfolio Organisation (NPO). Global Grooves will open the doors of its new community hub and Northwest Carnival Centre of Excellence in September 2021.
My work in education and community arts satisfies me greatly, bringing people together to create and celebrate. My dedication to cultures from around the world has led me to translate all of this knowledge into my passion for performing and teaching. Since 2004, I have completed multiple study trips to Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, and The Gambia.
