Escuela Nueva: culturally relevant teaching and learning in Colombia
Developing and implementing culturally relevant education

I am currently working in Sydney, Australia at a charity that takes healthcare to rural and remote communities (the Royal Flying Doctor Service).
My Fellowship was about an innovative education model (Escuela Nueva, or New School) which originated in rural Colombia in the 1980s. It has now become a leading model in Colombia and other countries across the globe. I came across Escuela Nueva through a professional contact who was hoping to translate this model to schools in socially deprived areas of London. I chose to spend six weeks in Colombia learning more about this model to provide recommendations to practitioners back in the UK. Escuela Nueva uses many different techniques, such as an active pedagogy and multi-grade learning, to improve educational outcomes, initially for remote-living children but now for children in any context. My contacts found my Fellow's Report useful as it highlighted key challenges to implementation in the UK context and offered some solutions.
Since my Fellowship, I have become passionate about access to essential services for rural and remote communities – be it education or health. My Fellowship was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an experience I draw upon daily.
