Encouraging higher education attainment in STEM subjects by employing student ambassadors

I am an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Suffolk.
The focus of my Fellowship was the role of student ambassadors in widening participation and equitable access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. I explored the operation and structure of USA university outreach programmes that aim to support school students' progression in STEM subjects. I was keen to see if student ambassadors are able to connect with younger students and, if so, what features of outreach programmes support this. I was also interested in whether female student ambassadors and ambassadors from other under-represented groups were able to challenge younger students' self-identity in relation to STEM subjects and promote engagement.
I have disseminated my findings extensively through conferences and events, and have written a chapter on my Fellowship findings for a new book on STEM education: STEM in Science Education and S in STEM: from Pedagogy to Learning, as well as an entry about STEM ambassadors for a new Sage encyclopaedia about Higher Education. I am currently working with NERUPI, a network of 62 universities, to explore and identify best practice in ambassador outreach activity.
