Biography

I am an academic and what science writer Graham Farmelo calls an 'independent scholar'. I write mainly on Churchill-related themes, including World War Two, and my Fellowship was instrumental in discovering fascinating material in the USA relating to one of Churchill's most controversial decisions – backing Tito's Partisan movement – and discovering that he was right. I am still linked to Churchill College in no small way thanks to the Fellowship, and the Churchill community was fabulous in my late wife's last years from 2015 to 2018.

I also teach a US study abroad programme here in the UK (linked to Wake Forest University) and am an active member of my local parish church. The joy of being a writer is that there is no retirement age!

My Fellowship was critical to my ongoing research and I am still using material that I discovered through it. It was life transforming, and as it was the last great experience before my wife's terminal illness began, it is one upon which I look back with enormous fondness.
