Biography
I am Technical Director at the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA). My Fellowship in 1990 was to compare the standards of animal welfare between EU countries with a view to harmonisation of transport and slaughter legislation.
I have worked in livestock production and marketing since leaving agricultural college in 1980. I have drawn on the experience and knowledge gained during my Fellowship in all aspects of my work, especially when speaking at conferences etc. The HSA has produced a wealth of educational and technical publications, many of which have been translated into other languages and are accessible, free of charge, on the HSA website www.hsa.org.uk.
My Fellowship paved the way for my career and gave me a taste for foreign travel, as well as boosting my self-confidence a thousand-fold. I have been secretary of the East Midlands Association and still attend its events whenever possible. As a result of my Fellowship, at least two of my former colleagues have been granted and undertaken Fellowships studying aspects of food animal welfare between the place of production and slaughter.
