Biography
My Fellowship on waste in 1991 enabled me to look at paint recycling in Denmark, and the separation of household wastes for recycling and safe disposal in Canada and the USA. I also attended the annual national recycling conference (NRC) in Milwaukee.
I was at that time working at Save Waste And Prosper (SWAP), a Leeds-based community enterprise. SWAP supported Leeds City Council, a leader in promoting separation of household waste at source, on behavioural change in recycling. Major companies were also establishing retail recycling facilities and recognising their producer responsibility obligations. The contacts and insights arising from the Fellowship were numerous and contributed to a substantial growth in innovative activity at SWAP, including significant advisory work with ASDA, B&Q and ICI Dulux on waste and packaging strategies.
In 2000, I switched my interest to influencing environmental behaviour change in sustainable transport. I was a pioneer in shared mobility, as founder of City Car Club, the first commercial national car club operator, and as CEO of Carplus (now CoMoUK) working with service operators, local authorities and governments to develop the sector.
