Bideford and Manteo: a special relationship
Reigniting through the arts the historic relationship between two towns in the UK and USA

I am a freelance creative producer working in the cultural heritage sector. I live in Bideford, north Devon. My Fellowship explored the relationship between north Devon pottery production and its export in the 17th century to the eastern seaboard of the United States. I also spent time in Bideford's twin town Manteo, North Carolina. This was a first contact, to make connections to the community and develop cultural heritage projects.
The pottery research was a starting point which has enabled me to build my own collection of sherds, create projects and maintain relationships with the curators of collections who I met in Virginia and North Carolina. I share my findings with eminent curators in the UK and the USA. Recently I have worked with the Burton Art Gallery and Museum in Bideford to curate a new display telling the story of Bideford and US pottery and tobacco trade in the 17th century. I have developed and continue to build relationships with the community of Manteo and there is scope for further exchanges.
My Fellowship experience continues to inform how I think and work and has enabled me to build a network I can share knowledge and experiences with.
