Biography

I am Head of Education and Communities at Learning through Landscapes (LtL), the UK's national school grounds charity. We are an educational charity that believes that all children and young people should have access to great school grounds for high-quality learning, play, health and connection with nature.

My Fellowship in 2003 looked at the way schools, and those working with them, reflected local culture and heritage through the design and use of their grounds. I visited schools in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand who were drawing upon the heritage of indigenous communities in both the design of their grounds and also through lessons and dance.

On returning to the UK, I continued to make links with those working in the school grounds sector around the world and in 2010 I managed an international school grounds conference in England for LtL. This led to the founding of the International School Grounds Alliance (ISGA).

Since then the ISGA has grown, with members based in six continents. Our regular international conferences enable us to showcase research and innovative practice in learning, play, design, health and nature connection in school grounds around the world.
