Biography

Since I embarked on my Churchill Fellowship, I have continued to lobby for greater support for disabled people and their families. I advised the former coalition government in 2013 on the Children and Families Act Green Paper by using my findings from this research. The Green Paper became law as the Children and Families Act 2014.

I continue to consult with many organisations across the country. In 2017, I set up the social enterprise Your Support Matters CIC, inspired by my Fellowship. Your Support Matters encourages disabled people to find the right personal assistant (PA) to enable them to live in the community, as well as campaigning for and promoting the role of a PA. In June 2020, I successfully applied for the Churchill Fellowship Covid-19 Action Fund. This gave me and my team at Your Support Matters the opportunity to carry out extensive research into the effects of the pandemic on disabled people and their PAs. We set up a hotline for disabled people and their PAs and produced a written report to send to decision-makers in Greater Manchester.
