My Fellowship was for an expedition into the Canadian wilderness on Vancouver Island and canoeing on the Bowron Lakes. I was specifically looking at the feasibility for future youth expeditions in the area and the suitability of the routes chosen. The Bowron Lakes expedition was being considered as a location for groups with additional learning needs. At the time, I was working in outdoor adventure at Kingston Maurward College, with mainstream students and those with additional needs.
My commitment to outdoor activities stemmed from my personal interest in wilderness exploration and the impact that outdoor learning has on engaging students of all abilities, especially those with ADHD.
Following my Fellowship I gained qualified status as a Duke of Edinburgh's Award Gold assessor, a Mountain and Moorland walking leader, an emergency first aider and as a BCU water leader. These qualifications resulted in me gaining places on a number of expeditions with groups in the wider community. As a result, I am able to pass on valuable skills in camp craft and expedition planning. These help others with their personal growth – through adventure we can all escape the ties of modern life.
