Biography
I am a former para athlete and Founder of Momentum Mobility & Rehab. I have spent much of my professional career in adaptive equipment, empowering others with disabilities to take part in sport and leisure activities for their own enjoyment. As a former athlete I have personally experienced the positive impact sport can have on individuals, spanning far beyond improving their physical and mental health. In the UK only 52% of disabled children partake in 30 minutes of physical activity per day by the time they reach 16, and this figure continues to decrease into adulthood with 72% of disabled adults stating at least one barrier to playing sport.
I want to understand more about the provisions and models overseas in order to find ways to improve this chasm of equality. Healthy activity should be part of everyone's day-to-day existence regardless of additional needs and physical differences – sport and recreation should be available to all. Through my research I hope to establish an understanding of working models that improve the provision of sporting activities. I can then use my findings to better understand the changes we need to make in the UK.
