Jonathan Farley
The problems and prospects involved in South Africa's transfer of power
Biography
Jonathan had been retired since 1999 from his role as principal lecturer in the Department of History and International Affairs at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He was awarded his Fellowship in 1994 for a regional study of Southern Africa's political, constitutional and economic development. The region at that time had just emerged from an extended period of white rule. His visit included Namibia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland in addition to South Africa and he met people active in political and public life in these countries.
After his return, he gave a number of talks bearing on his experience in South Africa and in 2008 he had a book published by Routledge, recounting the region's mixed fortunes both before and after the decline of white rule.
