Alternative Proteins - Adoption, Acceptance and Trust
Feeding the world with safe, healthy, sustainable and ethical protein sources
2023
London
I'm a biologist with a desire to solve the world's most pressing problems. I have an active interest in protein biochemistry and I'm passionate about sustainability, improving human health and advancing farmed animal welfare. The intersection of these interests is the exciting field of 'alternative proteins'.
These are safe, low impact, ethical and nutritious alternatives to conventional meat for human consumption. Some come from plants, fungi and bacteria and some are formed from animal cells grown in fermenters. The purpose of my Fellowship is to understand the financial, regulatory, legal, attitudinal, cultural, political, educational and logistical barriers to acceptance and adoption by conducting research in Europe, USA and Israel.
I have a lifelong interest in the natural world and have worked in science communication and education. I am passionate about using science to reduce suffering and improve the lives of humans and non-human animals. I will use the findings of my research to bring the health, sustainability and animal welfare benefits of alternative proteins to the UK by working with leaders in communication, policy and research.

"We shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken in order to eat the breast or wing, by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium… The new foods will be practically indistinguishable from the natural product from the outset, and any changes will be so gradual as to escape observation.”
