Biography

I am an associate professor in paramedicine and I have been a registered paramedic since 2012. As a paramedic I have provided care and treatment to an incredibly diverse range of patients within the UK, including those that have been born outside of the UK or have recently entered the country.

Paramedics utilise clinical guidelines that are written for the 'average' UK patient, which may not reflect the patient being treated. Paramedics adapt their assessment and treatments using their clinical judgement and understanding of that patient. However, there is limited education and training to support the care for international migrants and refugees. Evidence shows a disproportionately lower standard of care and satisfaction for patients born outside of the UK, with those recently entering the UK having some of the lowest statistics.

My aim is to learn how healthcare for international migrants and refugees is improved in Sweden and Finland, where healthcare data is significantly closer to their national average, and to use this learning to influence change in UK paramedic education and create clinical guidelines that automatically adapt to meet the needs of all individuals.
