Creating inclusive and accessible theatre for disabled people
2016
I am the Artistic Director of Oily Cart Theatre, creating sensory theatre performances for disabled and non-disabled children. The shows are highly accessible and range from being performed on stages, on trampolines, in hydrotherapy pools and even up in the air.
My Fellowship focused on exploring best practices in the area of inclusive theatre, with a particular focus on making theatre accessible for those with the most barriers to access – those who do not communicate through verbal language.
My Fellow's Report used case studies of best practice from around the world to then make recommendations for areas of future development, yet to be discovered. These ranged from integrating new technologies, to extending this work to those living with dementias.
My Fellowship aimed to share how to make theatre accessible to those who are least included in the cultural sector. As a result of my Fellowship I have, as director of a leading sensory theatre company, pushed forward practice and critical thought in this area. The Fellowship had a huge impact for me personally and professionally as an arts leader, and on raising the ambition for inclusive theatre.
