Biography
I am currently involved in a number of volunteer roles in Northern Ireland. I retired from full-time work in December 2020, after more than 22 years' employment in local councils managing cross-sectoral local partnership organisations. These included EU Peace Programmes, neighbourhood renewal, economic development and community planning.
My Fellowship, focusing on mobility for people in cities and towns, was undertaken in 1992 when I was managing Disability Action's Access and Transport Unit. I travelled to Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Belgium to investigate accessible public transport design and driver assessment centres to inform and assist practical and policy developments relevant to people with disabilities in Northern Ireland.
Experience gained from the Fellowship fed directly into Disability Action's Transport Advisory Committee and the delivery of services covering group transport, the introduction of door-to-door dial-a-ride services, and the development of the Northern Ireland Mobility Centre providing driver assessment and driving tuition for people with disabilities. Although I am no longer directly involved in this work, I now drive as a volunteer for local community organisations.
