Science and Technology AC Awardees 2024

Introduction

The following Fellows will be receiving an award following their Fellowship under Science and Technology.

Science and Technology

Elaine Manton (CF 2018)

Engaging girls in STE(A)M: careers through innovation and problem solving

Through the support of the Fellowship, I have shared my findings with networks nationally and internationally, including The British Council and GSA – The Global Schools Alliance. My research revealed that encouraging young women into STEM careers post-school is too late. In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, it is crucial to inspire and nurture the next generation of female innovators from a young age. I am working to create a model that schools can adopt to develop a tech-savvy, employable generation, driving meaningful educational change.

Peter Gallivan (CF 2020)

Re-imagining science centres as vital, inclusive community hubs

I shared my work with colleagues, providing inspiration for new programmes and initiatives. I also shared my trip on Twitter (X) as it progressed, helping spread awareness of the projects I visited within the sector. I will also be planning to share my report further now it is written, as well as talking at conferences in the coming months.

Darryl Ashford-Smith (CF 2023)

Enhancing Emergency & Volunteer Services Drone Use in the UK

I have promoted the use of drones in the emergency and volunteer services through a mixture of conferences and articles (yet to be published). I am currently in the planning and organising stage of setting up an organisation, specific to the United Kingdom, where key personnel can share information and learn from others to enhance their current capabilities.

Erin Dooley (CF 2019)

The future of digital healthcare and e-health

I have had some amazing opportunities since finishing my Fellowship. I was invited to be a speaker at the ICRA IEEE conference in health technology in Yokohama to speak on the topic of Digital Health Tech in Nursing and we will be putting forward a JSPS funding application. Also, I am working with colleagues in Kigali, Rwanda on a grant to promote 3D printed prostheses in developing communities.

Mohammad Usman Shah (CF 2018)

STEM: how to attract and retain talented South Asians

I found my calling during my Fellowship. While travelling the Middle East to explore diversity and inclusion, I came across a pervasive issue: modern slavery. Since returning, I decided to tackle modern slavery head on in an industry I personally really enjoy: dates. I founded Date Sultan, the UK's premier and ethical dates brand, which can now be found in Borough Market.

Daniel Glaser (CF 2019)

Can humans eliminate their unconscious biases by learning from machines?

I worked with Google on community engagement around their new building and then joined the Royal Institution to direct their programme. In addition I'm working on structures to bring people with different world views together through building and chairing public and corporate discussions.

Laura Randall (CF 2018)

Cultivating professional knowledge in keeping children safe online

The Fellowship created so many connections and learning opportunities. I was able to bring these connections made into the workplace and facilitate presentations and conferences, and trial new ideas and projects. The Fellowship also increased my confidence in this field. I gained promotions and was then headhunted by a company that has a huge role in my field and empowers me to make change.

Ritvij Singh (CF 2023)

Artificial Intelligence: applications in homelessness

I joined a leading strategy consulting firm to learn more about the application of AI in the public sector. I have worked on projects implementing AI technology in a range of industries including public sector casework, hospitals and large businesses. My next goal is to work closely with government agencies to tackle pressing challenges such as homelessness.

Emma Pickering (CF 2023)

Creating best practice for survivors of technology-facilitated abuse

I am implementing the recommendations from my report across the Violence Against Women Sector and encouraging the Government to include the recommendations within the Tackling Tech Abuse plan.

Lesley Palmer (CF 2020)

Cognitive ageing: variations in urban design between the UK and Japan

I completed my report and distributed it widely through my digital networks. I am in the process of applying for a further grant to support broader distribution nationally. This may include an exhibition and/or hard copy print of the report strategically delivered to key change-makers.
