The following Fellows will be receiving an award following their Fellowship under Education and Skills.

Education and Skills

Tim Crawford (CF 2020)

Raising the aspirations of disadvantaged young people in Northern Ireland

Compiling my Fellowship report incorporated the formulation of recommendations for policy and practice, which I hope will lead to pilot programme(s) to help improve the aspirations and attainment of disadvantaged young people in Northern Ireland. Since being awarded my Fellowship, I have reflected on my career trajectory and changed roles to harness opportunity and fulfil potential.

Nicola Beer (CF 2020)

Virtual mobility: opening up opportunities for international collaboration

I have been focusing on developing more contacts within the UK and encouraging people to consider trying out a Virtual Exchange. Producing my Fellowship report was so helpful in ensuring that I have some tangible information and guidance to share with people and I hope that I will be able to use it to support a new Virtual Exchange project.

Sarah Hovington (CF 2023)

Cerebral Vision Impairment (CVI) in Children and Young People

I have written an article for our professional association, VIEW. I have presented at the Positive Looking Best Practice Days, in person and online, CVI: the American Perspective. For special schools in Surrey, I developed and delivered a CVI training package that included showcasing classroom resources and strategies to support children. I have submitted a proposal to speak at the VIEW Conference.

Anna Sowerbutts (CF 2020)

Advocating for developmental language disorder: international best practice

I presented my Fellowship findings to numerous clinical and academic colleagues, including at a language disorders conference. I met with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists about the recommendations in my report, and plan to follow this up further. I also introduced innovations within my clinical work directly based on my Fellowship observations. There will be more to follow!

Andrea Duxbury (CF 2023)

Improving School Preparedness in Preschool Children and Families

I am looking into how to set up and fund a pilot of 6 to 8 weeks using the findings from my Fellowship. I plan to use what I have learned to run a trial project, reflect and evaluate and then run outdoor sessions for families with preschool age children. I would like to work with local authorities, schools and local groups to identify families who would find this approach most beneficial.

Alice Stott (CF 2018)

Oracy in the classroom: how can 'accountable talk' enrich learning?

I am leading oracy education in my role as Director of Programmes and Engagement at Voice 21, the national oracy education charity. I have helped to grow the organisation, supporting 1 in 20 schools in England to develop their students' speaking & listening skills. As well as contributing to education policy debates in the UK, my work has taken me to China and back to the US (where I completed my Fellowship).

Hannah Brownhill (CF 2020)

Whole-school approach to improved wellbeing and mental health

I have been working with two schools, a primary and a secondary, on their approach to wellbeing. I have also been working with people in the UK already active in the field of Positive Education to share my learning and discuss how we can spread the message more widely. I am working with the Chair of the International Positive Education Network to establish a charter in the UK.

Tom Garry (CF 2019)

Excellence in professional development for early-career teachers

I implemented my learning in a number of schools, and developed how teachers are trained and inducted into the profession in my own organisation. I have advocated for including deliberate practice in teacher preparation programmes and as part of professional development for all teachers.

Rachael Owhin (CF 2017)

Developing leadership in disadvantaged young people through education

I work in equality, diversity and inclusion, advising organisations on how to create more equity in the workplace, delivering training and leading programmes for disadvantaged young people. I led the Mayor of London's programme to increase the representation of young Black men in tech and construction and work at Resurgo, which runs the UK's most effective youth employability programme.

Julia Voce (CF 2019)

Skylarking: playfulness and presence with vulnerable children

I am now a social and therapeutic clown in my local community of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, East Brighton. I create spaces where laughter, play and kindness connect people of all ages and backgrounds. I can be found in my local school, library, sheltered housing scheme and the local community pub and cafe. Come and find me there by asking for The Clown Jools.

Kerry Cressey (CF 2020)

Refugee language learning and integration through host communities

I was interviewed by a local newspaper about my Fellowship and have spoken to other organisations in Sheffield, sharing my findings and recommendations with them. I have also spoken at my own organisation’s recent trustee meeting to recommend future ways of working that would see the results I observed during my Fellowship played out here.
